CPR Saves Lives

There are a few critical steps to providing CPR.

  1. Scene Safety - do a 360 degree scan around the area to ensure that it is safe for you to enter. You don't want to approach a situation where you might be injured and then there are two people that need help! If the scene is not safe, call 911 and wait for help. If it is safe, approach the person.
  2. Protect yourself with gloves, a face mask, goggles, and a CPR mask. Obviously we do not always have all of these things BUT if you have it, use it! Keep yourself safe.
  3. Check responsiveness - Give the person a good solid tap on the shoulder. Are they responding? If not, move to step 4.
  4. Call for help - activate EMS by calling 911 and if someone else is nearby, send them to get an AED.
  5. Check for breathing - look, listen, and feel for breathing. If the person is not breathing within 10 seconds of checking or they are making strange gurgling or gasping sounds, they are not getting enough oxygen. You need to start step 6.
  6. Begin CPR, starting with chest compressions. Put your hands in the center of their chest, over the sternum (Breastbone). Straighten your arms and begin to push HARD and FAST. You are aiming for a rate of 100-120 bpm and a depth of at least 2 inches for adults and anyone over 9 years of age. Count out loud to help yourself concentrate.
  7. Once you have completed 30 chest compressions, use your CPR mask to deliver 2 breaths over 6 seconds. If you do not have a CPR mask and you are not willing to provide mouth to mouth rescue breaths, KEEP PUSHING HARD AND FAST!
  8. Start the AED and apply the pads as soon as it arrives. If someone else is able to apply the pads, continue compressions until they have the pads on and the AED tells you to stop touching the patient.
  9. Stay until help arrives!
